The Dragon Fruit, a refreshing and colorful snack!

The Pitaya, also, known as Dragon fruit, has been gaining popularity in the last few years. Is it for its fashionable look? Possibly, with its fuchsia shell and polka dot interior, we get that it’s appealing to the eye, but don’t leave your taste buds out of it!

It’s also for it’s nutritional, digestive and preventive benefits that it’s in high demand. Not only is the Pitaya aesthetically beautiful, it will leave you feeling refreshed and energized.

Nutritional benefits

Even thought it’s cultivated in cactus with little water, it’s a fruit rich in minerals, vitamins A and C, calcium and fiber, and with only 60 calories. Don’t get turned off by its exotic flare, it is sweet to the taste which allows it to mix it easily with several recipes such as desserts, fruit salads or smoothies!

It’s great for digestion:

Dragon fruit is well known for its digestive benefits. It is an excellent intestinal activator and  very good to soothe bloating. Its low calorie count is also an excellent option during a detox treatment.

The heart in the right place:

Studies show that Pitaya helps decrease the chance of cardiovascular disease and hypertension. Furthermore, due to its high content of Omega 3, the Pitaya also helps to act against inflammatory sickness.

Get adventurous: Dragon fruit is one try this summer if you haven’t already ! Eat it before a workout for an energy boost, or after training to refresh and refill.

Here’s a great smoothie recipe to enjoy the Pitaya!

1 cup of cubed Pitaya

1 banana

1 tablespoon of honey

½ cup yogurt

10 ice cubes

Add pomegranate and mint to taste!
